Tom opens up

Tom has an official website now: www.tomcruise.com - the video montage of the various movies from the last 25 years is great ("Message from Tom'). I actually forget all the stuff he's been in though I have of course seen it all, quite a few many times over. It even makes me nostalgic, I really feel as if I've known him through all those movies all those years! Looking forward to more additions on the site. Though if they keep up the news and what not on there, this unofficial website may be unnecessary soon...

And now some scoop on Suri's second birthday right here and here.

Such a cutie pie!

For those who don't know yet, Tom's latest flick is about a Nazi officer who led a failed assasination attempt upon Hitler. It is, not surprisingly, quite controversial of course. It's scheduled to be released in August 2008 and also stars Kenneth Branagh and Bill Nighy, among others.

KANYE WEST TO PERFORM “ MISSION : IMPOSSIBLE III” THEME
HOLLYWOOD , CA ( February 6, 2006 ) – Grammy Award-winner Kanye West will interpret the theme to “ Mission : Impossible III,” bringing his inventive, masterful, and dynamic style to the iconic song. Dubbed “the smartest man in pop music” in an October ‘05 TIME Magazine cover story, West – who is also nominated for an additional eight Grammys at the upcoming 48th annual ceremony – continues the tradition of groundbreaking and innovative artists performing the classic theme, as members of U2 did in 1996 for “Mission: Impossible,” followed by Limp Bizkit in 2000 for “M:I–2.”

Tom Cruise said, “As a fan of Kanye’s work, I was thrilled at the prospect of him contributing his talents to ‘M:i:III.’ We wanted to take this installment of ‘ Mission ’ to the next level and Kanye’s music definitely added to accomplishing that goal. As we’ve done with the film, what he’s done with the ‘ Mission ’ theme is going to blow people away.”

Director J.J. Abrams said, “My goal is to take the ‘ Mission ’ franchise and re-interpret it to make a movie that is familiar, but absolutely brand new. Kanye has done just that with his version of the classic Lalo Schifrin theme, and we’re thrilled to be working with him.”

Producer Paula Wagner added, “With each ‘ Mission ’ installment, we have always put a team together that was representative of the very best at their respective crafts. With the addition of Kanye West's music to ‘M:i:III,’ we continue that tradition. His powerful, emotional style is the perfect complement for the mix of drama and action that is in this film.”

Also, after the ad spot runs during the Super Bowl, you can catch it on Apple's trailer section (http://www.apple.com/trailers/) in HD Quicktime on Monday, February 6th after 6pm. Here's the official press release:

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III” SUPER BOWL SPOT KICKS OFF
“THE ULTIMATE MISSION” SCAVENGER HUNT

During the first half of Super Bowl XL on February 5, Paramount Pictures will unveil a new thirty-second spot for “ Mission : Impossible III” that will also kick off The Ultimate Mission, a fully integrated interactive scavenger hunt. Headquartered at www.MissionImpossible.com, The Ultimate Mission invites online users to register as Impossible Mission Force agents to solve mysteries and find clues that have been embedded in original content created especially for partners’ sites; the found clues will pay off when moviegoers see “M:i:III” on May 5.

In the movie, Tom Cruise returns as Special Agent Ethan Hunt, who faces the mission of his life. Director J.J. Abrams (“Lost,” “Alias”) brings his unique blend of action and drama to the billion-dollar franchise. The film will be released nationwide on May 5, 2006 .

Commenting on the announcement, Gerry Rich, president of worldwide motion picture marketing for Paramount Pictures, said, “When you’ve got the goods, it’s exciting to share it with the fans as early as you possibly can. Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have brought all their talents to ‘M:i:III’ – this is Ethan Hunt’s most personal mission yet. It’s only a taste, but this spot will definitely tell you what we’ve got in store on May 5 th.”

The spot holds the clue to solve the first question in The Ultimate Mission, which starts the next day and spans the next three months. The scavenger hunt will range from the very largest sites on the web to the smallest but most loyal fansites. During the hunt, prospective IMF agents will use their web search and detection skills to find “M:i:III” badges integrated directly into partners’ content. As agents find badges, their dossiers on www.MissionImpossible.com will be stamped, similar to a passport, with logos of the informant sites where the answers were found. With each badge found, the dossier will reveal new code words containing clues to key story points of the film.

Amy Powell, vice president of interactive marketing for Paramount Pictures, said, “Never before has anyone tried to orchestrate a scavenger hunt with the breadth of ours and the diversity of partners we have involved. The goal of the ‘M:i:III’ Ultimate Mission is to allow ‘agents’ around the world to engage with the themes of ‘ Mission : Impossible,’ embracing technology in the same way the franchise has for decades. The hunt combines the best of two worlds: fans of Tom Cruise and the franchise will now have the opportunity to get personally involved with the most exciting ‘Mission’ so far, and fans of J.J. Abrams – who’ve previously used the Internet to unlock some of the mysteries of ‘Lost’ – will get to take that passion to a new level.”

“ Mission : Impossible III” stars Tom Cruise and is directed by J.J. Abrams. The film also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ving Rhames, Billy Crudup, Michelle Monaghan, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Keri Russell, Maggie Q, and Laurence Fishburne.

Paramount Pictures presents a Cruise|Wagner production, “ Mission : Impossible III.” The film is directed by J.J. Abrams, from a screenplay written by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & J.J. Abrams, based on the television series created by Bruce Geller. The film is produced by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner.

Paramount Pictures is part of the entertainment operations of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIAB), one of the world’s largest entertainment and media companies and a leader in the production, promotion, and distribution of entertainment news, sports and music.

Lots more pictures coming in a day or so from M:I:iii so stay tuned!

[01-05-06] Happy New Year, everyone! Perhaps not so for Tom & Katie, though... There are rumors that the relationship is on the rocks.

Here is a flattering bit on Tom's fashion sense that might be of interest.

Burbank, Calif., March 17, 2005- Prepare to launch 220 miles above Earth at 17,500 mph to experience a remarkable out-of-this-world adventure with the popular IMAX® film Space Station, the first-ever cinematic journey to the famed International Space Station (ISS). Blasting off onto DVD June 7, this one of a kind DVD is loaded with extras and priced to own at $19.98 SRP from Warner Home Video.

One of the most popular IMAX® films ever (over $57 Million U.S. Box Office), Space Station treats audiences like real astronauts from blast-off to life inside the ISS. Made with the cooperation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Space Station is the story of the unique partnership of 16 nations building a laboratory in outer space – a permanent facility for the study of the effects of long-duration exposure to zero gravity and the necessary first step towards the global co-operative effort needed if man is to someday set foot on Mars. The film is highlighted by the challenges, setbacks and triumphs of this groundbreaking engineering feat…and ultimately, the shared international victory of men and women whose dreams exceed the limits of life on Earth.

Space Station follows two separate space shuttles that leave from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center and Russia’s Baikonur Cosmodrome to rendezvous with their new home in orbit 220 miles above Earth. Tom Cruise: Crazy for Katie!

May 20, 2005

WATCH VIDEO of
Tom & Katie in Rome

The typically cool, calm and collected TOM CRUISE is no more, as the megastar is revealing he is crazy over new girlfriend KATIE HOLMES on national TV!

On Monday's episode of OPRAH, Tom doesn't even try to conceal his excitement over his new relationship -- he literally jumps up for joy when asked about the adorable, 26-year-old Ms. Holmes.

The audience then gets an ever bigger surprise, as Tom goes backstage to bring out his new girl for the world to see! Oprah's delighted reaction: "What has happened to you!?"

The handsome couple have been dating for a little over a month, and have been seen everywhere together -- whether it's snuggling at Oprah's White Tie Ball in Santa Barbara last weekend, kissing for the cameras in Europe or jet-setting off to Mexico!

It all started when Tom reportedly called Katie out of the blue for a private meeting. Next thing she knows, they're on his private jet dining on sushi -- and then vacationing in Rome together in front of the paparazzi!

Tom's summer blockbuster 'War of the Worlds,' opens June 29, while Katie's hot flick, 'Batman Begins,' flies into theaters June 15.

[05-18-05] ET has an exclusive, first look behind the scenes at the new Cruise/Spielberg collaboration!

Katie Holmes' father, Martin Holmes, says her relationship with Tom is "the real deal."  There's streaming video of a phone interview with him on www.wtol.com!
And an accompanying article can be seen here.

[04-28-05] Tom has a confirmed new love interest and she's a bit younger than our 42-year old hunk - Katie Holmes, soon to be seen as Batman's (Christian Bale) love interest in Batman Begins (coming out June 17th - must see movie, folks, if only for Christian's acting!) is 26 and definitely past her engagement to Chris Klein (broke up in February this year) and brief fling with Josh Hartnett. She's having a good year, I'd say!

Check out two articles with more juicy details here and here.

[04-11-05] The winners have now been notified via email of our Fade In Magazine contest giveaway. Thank you everyone for the terrific response in just a few days!!

[04-08-05] If you haven't seen the new trailer for War of the Worlds, you're missing out - it looks fantastic!

On a personal note, I just left a showing of Sin City about 40 minutes into it, and it was 40 minutes later than I should have! That movie has offended me on so many levels, it has claimed the spot for "Worst movie I've ever seen" (or not, since I couldn't even sit through it till the end - an EXTREMELY rate phenomenon for me, this is only the second such occurence in all my life, and I see movies weekly). And it's not the stylistic approach that I minded, I thought that was rather creative, but otherwise it was the most needlessly pornographic, pointlessly violent, unnecessarily disturbing piece of crap I have ever witnessed. Actually, it would be the second such movie - I feel very similarly about Kubrick's "Clockwork Orange" to give you a frame of reference on my movie perspectives. Anyway, just thought I had to put my two cents out there because this movie disturbed me that much and I have the luxury of this website to voice my opinions. - Webmaster

[03-03-05] Could Tom have a new lady in the works? We hear some rumors from Ted Casablanca's Awful Truth column:

Sofía Vergara

"I declare, I had just gotten off the horn with a pal closer to Tom Cruise than Liz is to her mutts (no joke), to ask about this Penélope Cruz-with-cleavage Tom's dating. (Sofía Vergara? Oh yeah--Mark Wahlberg's old flame and Jamie Foxx's flamette? Yup.)

"What's up?" I asked the source (who I'm keeping anonymous--don't wanna lose my Tom poop!), as if it were any of my damn business.

"Apparently, you knew about this before any of us did," said Deep-Cruise. "I saw that you said this would be happening a few weeks ago."

"Did I?" I responded, pulling a semi-denial straight out of the Madonna school of acting. "Oh, I was just told that by another source," I continued, not mentioning to Deep-Cruise that the other informant could probably best be described as Deeper-Cruise, but what-ev.

"Look, it was just one date," added Deep-C. "He took her home, kissed her good night. Outside. That was it."

Deeper-C. says a new gal-pal for Tom is in the works. Without a doubt. No more info was offered. Is it Sofía?"

Taking a break from filming 'War of the Worlds' for STEVEN SPIELBERG, a grinning Tom reunited with his 'Collateral' co-star to receive the Distinguished Career Achievement in Performing Arts Award.

'Collateral' was just one of 10 films nominated for Best Picture, alongside 'The Aviator,' 'Hotel Rwanda,' 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,' 'Kinsey,' 'Sideways,' 'Million Dollar Baby,' 'Ray' and 'The Phantom of the Opera.' But it would be 'Sideways' that would steal the Best Picture prize -- along with four other awards."

[04-01-04] Some scoop from E! Online's Ted for you (dishing on the breakup, possible motives, etc.) See Ted's full weekly gossip column here (LOVE IT!).

"I've been waiting for eons to hear about my last press request, which was a comment on the dirt that came from the same source who tipped me off to the breakup with Penélope Cruz. Said poop was the cupid quip that Tom wanted second wife Nicole back.

No word, as yet.

It makes sense though, par-tick when sources close to N.K. tell me how utterly committed the former twosome is with their kids. Apparently, Tom wants things back the way they were one relationship prior.

Who knows? But what I'm really, well, hesitant to reveal is what some who hang in the circles that keep the Cruise engine churning are chatting about: Mr. C. broke up with Ms. C. before the Oscars so as to get a sympathy card, not to mention an Oscar, to bitter boot!

Sorta like Nicole did last year. Or so it would seem (I happen to think it had more to do with her vibrant performance, but what the hell do I know? I just pass this back-stabbing crap along for your consumption).

Well, we do know the breakup occurred in January, at least, right? Oscar noms came out in February. But there was no T.C. nod for The Last Samurai, so no bustup news followed.

Jeez, this town is warped. Sometimes.

Hold the presses! Tom-love's swell new PR team did get back to me only to say they couldn't get back to me, no personal commentary--that sorta thang (certainly were peachy with the pissy-esque message though).

However. Though I don't have as many spies in Camp T.C. as I do in N.K.'s horsey set, a very close-a-rooney chum to Cruise told me this: "I hardly think Tom arranges his life based on the Oscars. In fact, you can count on it!"

Well, at this point, since T.C. has been robbed of the damn gold-butted thing twice (Born on the Forth of July, Magnolia), I would hope that's true."

[03-26-04] It appears the rumors about Tom & Penelope splitting in January were true - the couple has publicly confirmed the split! All we can say - we loved Nicole and we still do. Read the full disclose on the split below, courtesy of E!:

TOM & PENELOPE SPLIT UP
March 25, 2004

Hollywood's hottest couple is reportedly no more. People magazine reported Thursday that TOM CRUISE and PENELOPE CRUZ ended their three-year relationship in January. Cruise's sister and publicist LEE ANN DEVETTE tells the mag that the couple, who spent long periods apart while filming, "broke up at the end of January and it's amicable." Penelope's spokesman also told the magazine that neither star is dating anyone else and the two "remain good friends and still talk often."

[03-17-04] [Courtesy of E!'s Daily Fix Newsletter:] Spielberg & Cruise Declare 'War'

"STEVEN SPIELBERG and TOM CRUISE are re-teaming to bring 'The War of the Worlds' back to the big screen. Cruise is expected to star in what's sure to be a high-action, special effects-laden movie. H.G. WELLS wrote the book back in 1898, but it became a classic when ORSON WELLES' radio performance of the piece fooled people into thinking that Earth was actually under attack by Martians."

[03-03-04] Tom sends a heartfelt message to Melissa DeHart, an aspiring news reporter who is recovering from anorexia (and has been all over E!'s news). Check out the full article here.

[Excerpt from E! Online's Article:]
And helping Melissa to keep going is superstar TOM CRUISE, who videotaped a heartfelt message of hope to her.

"Melissa, hi, how are you?" said Tom. "Listen, I hope you're recovering very quickly, and just know that tomorrow is important. I want you to know that my very best wishes are with you, and we're thinking about you. So you be well and take care of yourself. Come on back, alright?"

Melissa told ET that getting a shot of motivation from Tom was the best medicine and that she hopes to meet him someday "when I'm a regular weight and it will be an even more brighter reunion. Thanks a lot."

[01-15-04] Tom & Penelope scoring a hit with E!'s Fashion Police -

[11-29-03] From the ETNewsletter of 11/26/03:

"HBO headed behind the scenes with TOM CRUISE for all-new footage of Tom's epic story of 'The Last Samurai.' The star with the multi-million dollar smile plays a jaded Civil War vet who goes to Japan to train its army in the ways of modern warfare, but Tom needed some training of his own. Stunt coordinator NICK POWELL was impressed by Tom's prowess with a sword and says by the end of the shoot Tom looked like a true Samurai. The larger-than-life battle scenes set on bucolic hills are just part of the story; Tom points out that it's also a romantic story.
HBO's "First Look: The Last Samurai" debuts on Monday. The movie hits theaters December 5th."

(November 3, 2003) - New York, NY - On November 25, 2003, Elektra Records will release Academy Award™-winning composer Hans Zimmer's score from this holiday season's highly anticipated film, the epic action drama The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise, Timothy Spall, Ken Watanabe, Billy Connolly, Tony Goldwyn, Hiroyuki Sanada and Koyuki.

The Last Samurai marks a career milestone for world-famous composer Hans Zimmer: his 100th film score. Zimmer began his film music career in the mid 1980s after achieving success as a pop recording artist in London, and entered film scoring through his collaborations with composer Stanley Meyers (The Deer Hunter, My Beautiful Launderette, Moonlighting), making his solo debut with A World Apart in 1988. His outstanding collection of work includes The Lion King, for which Zimmer won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a Grammy and a Tony, in addition to six other Oscar-nominated scores, including those for Best Picture winners Rain Man and Driving Miss Daisy, along with The Thin Red Line, As Good As it Gets, The Preachers Wife and The Prince of Egypt. His other diverse credits include Mission Impossible 2, Black Hawk Down, A League of Their Own, True Romance, the Grammy-winning Crimson Tide, and five films with director Ridley Scott, including Thelma & Louise, Hannibal, the multi-award winning Gladiator and, most recently, Matchstick Men. A pioneer in the use of synthesizers, digital instruments, and the latest computer technology, Zimmer is widely considered to be the father of integrating electronic sound with traditional orchestral arrangements.

Set in Japan during the 1870s, The Last Samurai tells the story of Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), an American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's army in the art of modern warfare. As the government attempts to eradicate the ancient Samurai warrior class, led by Kazumoto (Ken Watanabe), in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly affected by his encounters with Kazumoto and the Samurai, placing him at the center of a struggle between the two eras and worlds with only his own sense of honor to guide him.

“The first obstacle I faced with this score was that Japanese music can be truly inaccessible to most Western audiences”, explained Zimmer. “So I needed to immerse Cruise’s Algren character into this foreign world to such a degree that it ultimately becomes his home. The key to this was a concept I formed right at the beginning of the project: writing Western melodies informed by a Japanese aesthetic, to find a way of contrasting the romanticism of America with the formality and stillness of Japan. So I wrote a typically overblown, restless, and, ultimately, very Western theme for Algren; but one that also develops alongside the character as he’s drawn towards Katzumoto’s peaceful themes concerning power and nature.”

To highlight the formality of Japanese culture in his score, Zimmer makes great use of the large, wooden Japanese Taiko drum. “Everybody uses Taikos in their scores these days, but I felt that nobody had ever really captured their awesome and emotional power. For example, when you stand next to someone who hits an enormous Taiko with something resembling a baseball bat, your whole ribcage expands from the shear size of the sound; but if you tap them lightly, it’s like thunder rolling down a valley.” To achieve these sonic qualities for the film, Zimmer turned to electronics: “I spent three weeks recording and manipulating around 10,000 Taiko hits electronically until they started to sound natural, and then selected the best ones by their emotional resonance. The whole process of molding and sculpting these sounds in my studio was very Last Samurai, and I think it’s best summed up by Kazumoto himself in the movie, that you can spend your life looking for a perfect cherry-blossom and it wouldn’t be a wasted life.”

The Last Samurai will be released nationwide by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 5, 2003. The Elektra Records soundtrack will be in stores on November 25, 2003.
